CNN —After a man wrongfully spent 37 years in prison for rape and murder, the Tampa City Council unanimously voted Thursday to approve a $14 million settlement in a federal lawsuit. Robert DuBoise, who was convicted of the August 1983 rape and murder of 19-year-old Barbara Grams in Tampa Heights, was exonerated in September 2020 after DNA evidence established that he did not commit the crimes. That made him the 30th person exonerated from Florida’s death row, according to the Innocence Project of Florida, which assisted with DuBoise’s case. CNN has reached out to the Innocence Project of Florida for comment on the settlement. During the city council meeting, council member Charlie Miranda commented on what DuBoise has lost through the wrongful conviction.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Retired wrestler Hulk Hogan and a friend rescued a teenage girl who was trapped in an overturned vehicle after a crash in Florida, according to Hogan's social media posts. Hogan said on the social media platform X that he used a ball point pen to puncture the car's airbag and free the girl after witnessing the accident Sunday night in Tampa. His new wife, yoga instructor Sky Daily, took to Facebook to praise the quick action taken by her 70-year-old husband and the couple's friend Jake Rask. “By all appearances, she was unscathed, just really rattled, which is an absolute miracle!” Daily wrote. The Tampa Police Department said in an email Tuesday that there were only minor injuries from the crash.

CNN —Tampa Mayor Jane Castor made a big catch while fishing the Florida Keys with family late last month, spotting and hauling in a package containing 70 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of approximately $1.1 million, according to the mayor’s office. The package was discovered south of Marathon on July 23, according to US Border Patrol. US Border PatrolThe packaging contained 25 bricks of cocaine, according to Border Patrol. Before her current role as mayor, Castor “spent 31 years with the Tampa Police Department, serving in nearly every capacity and in nearly every neighborhood of the city. In October of 2009, Castor became Tampa’s first female Chief of Police, serving for six years in that role,” according to her bio on the city of Tampa website.

CNN —The 2-year-old daughter of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett drowned in a swimming pool Sunday at the family’s Florida home, police said. Officers responded to a Beach Park home in Tampa at 9:30 a.m. after a child had fallen into a pool, the Tampa Police Department said. The Buccaneers released a statement in support of Barrett and his family. In 2019, Barrett signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was a part of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl winning team in 2021.

CNN —A woman delivering for DoorDash in Florida was attacked and kidnapped before being rescued by her family members, police say, and a male suspect has been arrested. Family members then called police, and officers were dispatched to the hotel. The victim’s family, who had been tracking her phone, arrived at her location and rescued her from the car, authorities said. Joseph Killins has been charged with armed kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, armed sexual battery and aggravated battery with a weapon, authorities said. Killins was then arrested late Friday night and charged with the DoorDash delivery driver’s kidnapping and battery, among others.

A DoorDash driver was kidnapped while attempting to make a delivery at a Tampa hotel. The victim was on a call with her girlfriend at the time of the attack, and she alerted the family. The family tracked her phone and tracked her down. The woman's family tracked her phone to the Belara Lakes Apartments on N. Waterford Avenue and rescued her from the car. Both the DoorDash driver and the wounded woman were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Tampa Police Department announced it had terminated an officer Tuesday following an internal investigation into a video where he was seen dragging a woman into jail. Interim Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said Damon's actions were "unacceptable and are not tolerated at this department." Supervisors at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the agency which manages the jail, referred Damon's actions to Tampa Police's standards bureau. Tampa Police Department had revised its protocols in 2013 following a similar incident with uncooperative prisoners. Damon's termination comes after two other incidents of police misconduct at the Tampa Police Department in recent weeks.

A woman who identified herself as the child’s mother told The Associated Press the boy is 10 years old. A police officer later told the AP the boy is older than 10, but he couldn’t release his information because he’s a juvenile. The officer said the mother has several children and was confused about which one jumped onto the field. Tampa Police Department spokesperson Eddy Durkin said the boy was issued a civil citation and given a notice to appear in court.
